Cambodia's dramatic Mekong waterfall on the Laos border
Sopheakmit Waterfall (ទឹកជ្រោះសុភមិត្ត / ទឹកជ្រោះសុភ័ក្រមិត្ត) is one of Cambodia's most dramatic natural attractions, where the Mekong River crashes through a broad rocky formation near the Cambodia–Laos border.
It is also known by several names, including Preah Nimit/Preah Nimith Waterfall (ទឹកជ្រោះព្រះនិមិត្ត) and L'Bak Khaon (ល្បាក់ខោន). Cambodia's National Authority for Preah Vihear identifies it as a natural attraction in Kampong Sralao II Commune, Chhaeb District, Preah Vihear Province, while tourism organizations also associate the site with Stung Treng because of its proximity to the province.

Why is Sopheakmit Waterfall famous?
The attraction is unusual because this isn't a narrow mountain waterfall.
Instead, the Mekong itself becomes a huge system of rapids and cascades, rushing over large rocks along the Cambodian–Lao frontier. The waterfall has been described as having a roughly 26-metre tiered rocky section.
The Cambodian Ministry of Tourism lists Sopheakmith Waterfall among Stung Treng's attractions and highlights the province's waterfalls, wetlands and Mekong landscape.
What makes it special?
🌊 Powerful Mekong rapids
🇰🇭🇱🇦 Cambodia–Laos border landscape
🪨 Huge natural rock formations
🌿 Remote countryside
📸 Excellent landscape photography
🚤 Connection with Preah Rumkel ecotourism
🐬 Nearby Mekong wildlife and Irrawaddy dolphin areas
What Can You Experience?
1. 🌊 Watch the Mekong crash over the rocks
This is the main attraction.
Rather than looking at a single waterfall, you'll see a broad stretch of rushing water, rapids and rocky cascades.
During the wet season, the river can become extremely powerful. During the dry season, more of the rocks and formations become visible. Cambodia's National Authority for Preah Vihear notes that the waterfall changes considerably between rainy and dry seasons.
2. 🇰🇭🇱🇦 Experience the Cambodia–Laos border landscape
One of the most interesting aspects is simply being at the upper Mekong near the international border.
This makes the attraction particularly different from Cambodia's more famous waterfalls such as:
- Kulen Waterfall
- Bou Sra Waterfall
- Ka Chanh Waterfall
- Kbal Spean
Sopheakmit is essentially a Mekong waterfall/rapid system, not a conventional jungle waterfall.
3. 📸 Photography
It's an excellent destination for landscape photography.
Best subjects include:
- Mekong rapids
- Rock formations
- Wide river views
- Mist and spray
- Border landscapes
- Local boats
- Sunset light
For dramatic photographs, dry-season water levels can expose more of the rocky formations, while the wet season produces a much more powerful river flow.
4. 🚤 Combine it with Preah Rumkel
This is one of the best ways to experience the area.
Preah Rumkel is a community-based ecotourism village on the Mekong and serves as a gateway to the waterfall area. The Ministry of Tourism lists activities including boat trips, wildlife watching, cycling, forest walks and visits to the Mekong waterfalls.
You can combine:
Preah Rumkel village → boat trip → Sopheakmit Waterfall → Mekong wildlife → village meal/homestay
That makes the trip much more worthwhile than simply driving to the waterfall and leaving.
5. 🐬 Look for Mekong wildlife
The wider Preah Rumkel area is known for Irrawaddy dolphins, although sightings are naturally not guaranteed.
The Ministry of Tourism identifies the Mekong around Preah Rumkel as an area where visitors can observe these rare dolphins, along with birds and other wetland wildlife.
6. 🚲 Explore the countryside
If you stay around Preah Rumkel, you can also explore the surrounding villages and countryside by bicycle.
The area is much quieter than Siem Reap or Phnom Penh and offers a good opportunity to experience rural Mekong Cambodia.
Best Time to Visit
⭐ November–April
This is generally the better period if your goal is to see the rock formations and cascades clearly.
The Preah Vihear tourism authority specifically recommends November to May as a prime period, noting that water conditions are clearer and the rainy season can make the water more muddy.
🌧️ Rainy season
The waterfall becomes much more powerful as Mekong water levels rise.
However:
- Water can be turbulent
- Rocks may be submerged
- Conditions can be slippery
- Swimming becomes dangerous
The visual character of the waterfall changes dramatically with the river level.
Can You Swim?
Do not treat the main rapids as a swimming area.
The Mekong current around the waterfall is powerful and unpredictable.
Although the National Authority for Preah Vihear notes that some sections of the attraction can be used for bathing during the dry season, this should not be interpreted as permission to swim in the main rapids or near the waterfall itself.
For visitors, the safest approach is:
Enjoy the waterfall from designated viewing areas and stay well away from strong currents.
Where Is It?
There is some confusing information online because the attraction sits in an area associated with both Stung Treng and Preah Vihear.
The National Authority for Preah Vihear places the waterfall at:
Kampong Sralao II Commune, Chhaeb District, Preah Vihear Province, close to the Laos border.
The Cambodia Tourism Association describes it as a Stung Treng attraction on the Cambodia–Laos border, adjacent to Preah Vihear.
So for TravelKH, I would describe it as:
Sopheakmit Waterfall is a Mekong waterfall on the Cambodia–Laos border, in the northern Cambodia area where Preah Vihear and Stung Treng provinces meet.
That avoids the common problem of incorrectly assigning it exclusively to one province.
How Far Is It From Stung Treng?
Official and tourism sources give different distances depending on the route and starting point.
The National Authority for Preah Vihear gives approximately 64 km from Stung Treng town via National Road 9, while other tourism sources place it around 80 km or more depending on the access route.
For TravelKH, I recommend saying:
Approximately 65–80+ km from Stung Treng, depending on the route and access point.
How to Visit
🚗 By private car
The most convenient option if travelling from Stung Treng.
🛺 By local transport
Possible, but because this is a remote destination, arrange your return transport in advance.
🚤 By boat
If using Preah Rumkel Community-Based Ecotourism, boat trips can be arranged to access the Mekong waterfall area. The Ministry of Tourism lists boats between Preah Rumkel and the waterfall as part of the community's tourism services.

Sopheakmit vs Khone Phapheng
Travelers sometimes confuse the two.
| Sopheakmit | Khone Phapheng |
|---|---|
| 🇰🇭 Cambodia | 🇱🇦 Laos |
| Upper Mekong | Mekong |
| Cambodia–Laos border | Laos |
| Less developed | More established tourist attraction |
| Remote | More tourism infrastructure |
| Great for adventure | Easier for mainstream tourism |
They are part of the broader Mekong rapids/falls landscape around the Cambodia–Laos region, but they are not the same tourist site.
Why Visit Sopheakmit?
I'd particularly recommend it for travelers who want:
✅ Off-the-beaten-path Cambodia
✅ Mekong scenery
✅ Remote destinations
✅ Photography
✅ Ecotourism
✅ Local village experiences
✅ Cambodia–Laos border landscapes
✅ A different type of "waterfall"
It is not the best choice if you're looking for:
❌ A developed resort
❌ Easy access from Siem Reap
❌ Lots of restaurants and hotels
❌ A conventional swimming waterfall
