Battambang is one of Cambodia's best provinces for travelers interested in less-crowded Khmer temples and local Buddhist culture. Unlike Siem Reap, where the focus is the enormous Angkor complex, Battambang offers a mix of 11th–12th-century Angkorian ruins, hilltop temples, active pagodas and rural archaeological sites. The Ministry of Tourism lists Barsaet, Wat Ek Phnom, Phnom Banan and Prasat Snung among the province's notable temples.

1. ⭐ Phnom Banan — Best Temple in Battambang
Phnom Banan (ប្រាសាទភ្នំបាណន់) is the temple I would put at #1 for most visitors.
It sits on a hill south of Battambang and combines an ancient Khmer temple with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
The Ministry of Tourism dates the temple's development from the mid-11th to late 12th century, with construction associated with Udayadityavarman II and later Jayavarman VII.
Why visit?
- Five-tower Khmer temple layout
- Hilltop setting
- Rice-field views
- Sangker River landscape
- Relatively peaceful atmosphere
- Excellent photography
The temple is reached by climbing a substantial staircase, so it is worth visiting when temperatures are more comfortable.
Best time
Early morning or late afternoon

★★★★★ — Must visit
2. ⭐ Wat Ek Phnom — Best Ancient Ruins Near the City
Wat Ek Phnom (ប្រាសាទឯកភ្នំ) is an atmospheric 11th-century temple complex approximately 11 km north of Battambang by the shorter route.
The ancient Hindu temple is now heavily ruined, but that is part of its character.
You can see:
- Laterite walls
- Ancient sandstone structures
- Carved lintels
- Remaining bas-reliefs
- A large modern Buddhist complex
- Rural Cambodian scenery
The temple is particularly interesting because an active modern pagoda sits beside the ancient ruins, creating a striking contrast between old and new Cambodia.

3. 🏔️ Phnom Sampeou — Temple + Caves + Sunset
Phnom Sampeou (ភ្នំសំពៅ) is slightly different from Phnom Banan and Wat Ek Phnom.
It is a limestone mountain containing Buddhist shrines, caves and historical sites. The Ministry of Tourism identifies Phnom Sampeou as one of Battambang's major attractions.
Why visit?
You can combine several experiences in one visit:
Temple → mountain viewpoint → caves → history → sunset → bat emergence
The site also contains important memorial locations associated with the Khmer Rouge period, so the historical areas should be visited respectfully.
🦇 The famous bat experience
Around sunset, huge numbers of bats emerge from the caves and fly across the countryside.
This is one of the most memorable evening experiences in Battambang.
Best time
3:30 PM – sunset
TravelKH rating
★★★★★ — Must visit
Technically, Phnom Sampeou is better described as a mountain religious and historical complex rather than simply an ancient Khmer temple.
4. 🛕 Barsaet Temple — Best Hidden Temple
Barsaet Temple (Prasat Barsaet) is an excellent choice for travelers who want something more off the beaten path.
The temple was constructed during the reign of King Suryavarman I, between approximately 1036 and 1042, according to Tourism Cambodia.
Today, the temple is severely damaged and only limited architectural remains survive.
One interesting feature is an ancient pond beside the temple measuring approximately 20 m × 12 m, which reportedly retains water year-round.
Best for
- History enthusiasts
- Archaeology
- Quiet locations
- Travelers who have already visited the main temples
TravelKH rating
★★★☆☆ — For temple enthusiasts
5. 🛕 Prasat Snung — Three Small Brick Shrines
Prasat Snung (Prasat Sneung) is a lesser-known temple site in the Snung area.
The eastern temple consists of three separate brick shrines on a hill, with architectural characteristics similar to other 12th-century temples.
There are actually East and West Sneung temple sites, so don't assume the name refers to only one structure.
Why visit?
It gives travelers a different perspective from the monumental temples of Angkor.
Instead of huge temple complexes, you get:
small-scale Khmer architecture + rural landscape + fewer tourists.
TravelKH rating
★★★☆☆ — Good for explorers
6. 🐘 Wat Tahm-rai-saw — Best City Temple
If you don't want to travel outside Battambang, visit Wat Tahm-rai-saw, also known as the White Elephant Pagoda.
It is located in the city center and is one of Battambang's accessible Buddhist sites. Tourism Cambodia lists it among the city's attractions.
Unlike Phnom Banan and Wat Ek Phnom, this is primarily a living Buddhist temple, rather than an ancient Khmer ruin.
Best for
- Understanding contemporary Cambodian Buddhism
- Architecture
- Local photography
- Easy city sightseeing
TravelKH rating
★★★★☆ — Good city stop
7. 🛕 Wat Kandal — Local Buddhist Culture
For travelers interested in living Cambodian culture rather than archaeological ruins, Wat Kandal is worth considering.
It is much less about ancient Khmer architecture and more about experiencing an active Cambodian pagoda.
This type of temple can be especially interesting for visitors who want to understand:
- Buddhist ceremonies
- Pagoda architecture
- Monks' daily environment
- Local religious traditions
Dress modestly and follow the pagoda's instructions, particularly regarding shoes and entering sacred buildings.

🏆 My Ranking
If a traveler asks me “Which temples should I visit in Battambang?”, I'd recommend:
For first-time visitors
1. Phnom Banan ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
2. Wat Ek Phnom ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
3. Phnom Sampeou ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
4. Wat Tahm-rai-saw ⭐⭐⭐⭐
5. Barsaet Temple ⭐⭐⭐
6. Prasat Snung ⭐⭐⭐
7. Wat Kandal ⭐⭐⭐
🗺️ Best Temple Route
You don't need to visit every temple.
Route 1 — Best for First-Time Visitors
Battambang City → Phnom Banan → Phnom Sampeou → Bat Cave
This is my recommended one-day temple route.
Morning
Phnom Banan
Spend about 1.5–2 hours exploring the temple and enjoying the countryside views.
Afternoon
Travel toward Phnom Sampeou.
Late afternoon
Explore the mountain, Buddhist sites and caves.
Sunset
Watch the famous bat emergence.
Route 2 — Northern Temple Route
Battambang → Wat Ek Phnom → countryside → Battambang
This is an easier half-day route and works well if you also want to explore the city.
Route 3 — Archaeology Enthusiast
Battambang → Barsaet → Prasat Snung → Phnom Banan
This route is better for travelers who have already seen the major attractions and want lesser-known Khmer archaeological sites.
🏛️ Ancient vs Modern Temples
This distinction is useful when creating TravelKH content.
| Temple | Ancient Khmer Ruin? | Active Buddhist Site? |
|---|---|---|
| Phnom Banan | ✅ | Some religious activity |
| Wat Ek Phnom | ✅ | ✅ Modern pagoda |
| Phnom Sampeou | ❌ Mainly later religious complex | ✅ |
| Barsaet | ✅ | Limited |
| Prasat Snung | ✅ | Modern pagoda nearby |
| Wat Tahm-rai-saw | ❌ | ✅ |
| Wat Kandal | ❌ | ✅ |
This prevents travelers from assuming that every “wat” or “temple” in Battambang is an Angkorian archaeological monument.
👕 Dress Code for Battambang Temples
For ancient ruins, especially those that are still regarded as sacred places:
- Cover shoulders
- Cover knees
- Avoid crop tops
- Avoid very short shorts
- Wear comfortable walking shoes
- Bring water and sun protection
For active Buddhist pagodas, dress more conservatively and be prepared to remove shoes when entering appropriate temple buildings.
📸 Best Temples for Photography
🥇 Phnom Banan
Best combination of temple + landscape + countryside.
🥈 Wat Ek Phnom
Best for ruins and atmospheric photography.
🥉 Phnom Sampeou
Best for mountain, sunset and dramatic landscape photography.
Barsaet
Best for quiet archaeological photography.
Prasat Snung
Best for less-touristy Khmer architecture.
Battambang vs Angkor: What Is Different?
Don't visit Battambang expecting another Angkor Wat.
Angkor = monumental Khmer Empire capital
Battambang = smaller temples + countryside + living culture + colonial city
That is precisely why Battambang is worth adding to a Cambodia itinerary.
The province's official tourism information highlights Barsaet, Wat Ek Phnom, Phnom Banan and Prasat Snung as key temple attractions, while Phnom Sampeou adds a very different combination of religious, natural and historical experiences.
⭐ Best Overall Recommendation
If you only have one day, don't try to visit all seven.
I'd choose:
Phnom Banan → countryside → Phnom Sampeou → sunset/bat emergence
If you have two days, add:
Wat Ek Phnom + Battambang city temples
And if you're a serious Khmer archaeology enthusiast, add Barsaet and Prasat Snung.
