How to Apply for a Student Visa (ES Visa) in Cambodia

·

,

If you're planning to study at a university, language school, or other recognized educational institution in Cambodia, you'll generally need an ES (Student) Extension of Stay.

The ES Visa is not a separate entry visa. Instead, you first enter Cambodia with an Ordinary (E-Class) Visa, then apply for an ES Extension of Stay after arriving.

What is the ES Visa?

The ES (Student) Extension of Stay allows foreign nationals to remain in Cambodia while enrolled in a recognized educational institution.

It is suitable for:

  • University students
  • International school students
  • Khmer language students
  • Vocational training students
  • Exchange students
  • Other approved education or training programs

As long as you remain enrolled and continue to meet the requirements, the ES extension can generally be renewed for the duration of your studies.

Step 1: Obtain an Ordinary (E-Class) Visa

Before you can receive an ES Extension, you must enter Cambodia with an Ordinary (E-Class) Visa.

The E-Class Visa normally allows:

  • Initial stay: 30 days
  • Single entry
  • Eligible for in-country extensions, including ES, EB (Business), EG (Job Seeker), and ER (Retirement).

Step 2: Enroll in a Recognized School

You must be accepted by a recognized Cambodian educational institution.

Examples include:

  • Universities
  • Colleges
  • International schools
  • Language schools
  • Vocational training institutes

Your school will normally provide an acceptance or enrollment letter, which is one of the key documents for the ES application.

Step 3: Prepare the Required Documents

Requirements may vary depending on your school and the immigration authorities, but applicants are commonly asked to provide:

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • Ordinary (E-Class) Visa
  • Completed extension application
  • Recent passport-sized photographs
  • Letter of acceptance or enrollment from the school
  • Proof of financial support (if requested)
  • Local address in Cambodia
  • FPCS (Foreigners Present in Cambodia System) registration through your accommodation, where applicable.

Step 4: Apply for the ES Extension

Submit your application before your initial 30-day E-Class Visa expires.

Applications are usually made:

  • Through a licensed visa agency, or
  • Directly with Cambodia's General Department of Immigration.

Many international students choose a visa agency because they handle document preparation and submission.

Step 5: Choose Your Extension Period

The ES Extension is commonly available for:

Extension LengthSuitable For
1 MonthShort courses
3 MonthsLanguage programs or short-term study
6 MonthsSemester-based programs
12 MonthsDegree programs or long-term study

Renewal is generally possible while you remain enrolled at your educational institution.

Can You Work on an ES Visa?

The ES Extension is intended for study, not employment. It does not by itself authorize you to work in Cambodia.

If you later take up employment, you may need to change to an appropriate visa extension (such as EB) and obtain any required work permit.

Processing Time

Processing times vary depending on the immigration office or visa agency. Many applications are completed within several working days, although delays are possible during busy periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter Cambodia with a Tourist Visa and then apply for an ES Visa?

The standard route is to enter with an Ordinary (E-Class) Visa and then apply for the ES Extension. This is the pathway recognized for long-term students.

Can I renew my ES Visa?

Yes. As long as you remain enrolled at a recognized Cambodian educational institution and continue to provide the required supporting documents, the ES Extension is generally renewable.

Do I need a sponsor?

No employer sponsor is required. However, you must normally provide documentation from your school confirming your enrollment.

Can my family accompany me?

Cambodia does not currently have a dedicated student-dependent visa category. Family members generally need to qualify for and hold their own appropriate visa or extension based on their circumstances.

TravelKH Tip

If you're planning to study in Cambodia for more than a few weeks, enter with an Ordinary (E-Class) Visa instead of a Tourist Visa. After enrolling at a recognized school, you can apply for the ES Student Extension of Stay, allowing you to remain in Cambodia legally for the duration of your studies, subject to renewal requirements.
